MINISTER CHAIRMAN?

SENSE OF BENEFITS TO

COME

The possible outcome of the appointment of a Cabinet Minister as chairman of thf New Zealand Poultry Board was dealt with, partly in humorous vein, by delegates attending the annual conference of the New Zealand Poultry Producers' Association yesterday.

A remit from the Waikato branch requesting the Government to have a Minister appointed to the position was carried.

Mr. G. D. Hunter, who moved the adoption of the remit said it was not a vote of no confidence in the present chairman. It was prompted by a desire to emulate the wheat growers, who had succeeded in obtaining a price more than double the open market price. It might be possible tor the poultry producers to get a better price for their B grade eggs than they now received for A grade.

"There is a great need at present to nave a Cabinet Minister in such a position that he must listen to all our Grievances." said Mr Hunter, "and to have him in such a position that we can make his life a burden If we can do that the industry will immediately move out of its infancy and become one of the major industries in this country."

Mr. J. W McGlinchy (Christchurch) said that to have a Cabinet Minister as chairman would give the industry some importance and social standing. "We are more important financially than the Wheat Committee." he said.

"I can't see any reason for assuming that what benefits the wheat farmer has obtained are due to a Cabinet Minister being chairman of the Wheat Commitee," said Mr E. J. S Miller (Taraiiaki). "You would only make the life of a Cabinet Minister a burden once, and then there would be a deputy chairman appointed "

The president (the Rev W F Stent) said that If the remit was not carried it would be a reflection on Cabinet Ministers.

The remit was adopted.
