TRADE PACT WITH BRITAIN
INDIAN LEGISLATURE

NEW DELHI, March 28,
The Legislative Assembly, by 59 votes to 47, refused to give its approval to the trade agreement between India and Britain. The Moslem League Party abstained from voting.
It was reported from London on March 22 that a trade agreement between Britain and India had been concluded. It was to operate for three years and was expected to benefit the Lancashire cotton industry. Among its terms were: —India to lower the duties on British cotton goods in the first year from 20 to 15 per cent. Duties in subsequent years to depend on the volume of exports. Ottawa preferences were to be generally continued.
