THE EASTER PRELUDES
FINALS THIS WEEK
GOOD HAWKE'S BAY FIELDS
The final Easter preludes will be staged thisr week, and the fixture of main interest in the Dominion will be the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, which opens at Hastings tomorrow and concludes on Saturday. With the resumption of the mid-autumn dates, this meeting has now regained much of its former importance in the annual calendar, and the fields for tomorrow are of excellent all-round size and quality. The weather has been fine for weeks past in the Bay, and the track for the meeting will be very fast, unless there is any unexpected change to rain. The course is a well-graded elliptical mile circuit, with a good straight, and it is one on which the better horses usually have full chance. The betting will.be under the singlepool system. TROPHY FOR CUP. The feature event of the first day's racing will be the old-established Hawke's Bay Cup, with a history dating back to 1875, and a sequence unbroken even during the trying times the club experienced - following the earthquake in 1931. It is understood that this is only the second occasion on which a gold cup trophy has been attached to this race, the other occasion being at the Silver Jubilee Meeting two years ago. However, there have often been other trophies going with the race, and one about fifty years ago was a piece of plate valued at 100 sovereigns. A fine field has met the acceptance for tomorrow's Cup, including the Trentham pair, Siegmund and Yours Truly, and other visiting horses in Play On, Taitoru, and Dainty Sue. The favourite, despite her weight, will probably still be that brilliant filly Lady Furst. who at her last start so impressively won the Woodville Handicap, over the same distance, under 7.13, with Siegmund, 7.12, only third. Others who will be in keen request are Ivar, winner of the Napier Park Cup under 7.9, carried 7.2, at his last start, Dainty Sue, and the promoted hack Yours Truly; while Siegmund, Play On, Big Dook, Taitoru, and Tiger' Gain possess form chances among the remainder, depending on how the race is run. The acceptance has reduced the Havelock Flying Handicap to seven, and a good favourite promises to be made of the three-year-old filly Kathbella, who easily won the open sprint recently at Napier Park under 7.11, carried 7.4, and has since been galloping brilliantly. Of the others Golden Blonde and Aureus may be the best. Sly Fox and Peter Beckford have not raced since the spring. Except for the hurdles, the other five events on the programme have filled well and horses who should show up in them are Small Boy and Hanover (Hurdles), Hunting Squire, The Ring, Kalika, and Defray (Maiden), Sternchase, Hunter's Eve, Halley, Blonde Princess, Screen Lord, and Mimicry (Autumn), Lutanist, Endorsement, Dainty Dell, and Regale (Nursery), and Mataroa, Red Witch, Tom-Tom, Granvale, and Minnow (Heretaunga).
