THEFT ON SHIP

Appearing for sentence before Mr. W. F. Stilwejl, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today on a charge of stealing from the cruise liner Strathallan, at Auckland, jewellery and other goods valued at £48, the property of the Army and Navy Stores, of London, Frank William Chalmers, aged 17, a lift boy, and Victor Jack Bonny, aged 19,' a steward's assistant, both former members of the crew of the Strathallan, were granted probation for 18 months, on the condition that they remain under the control of the Salvation Army until' they get work or a passage out of the country. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said that the shipping company concerned had promised to arrange for getting the boys back to England as soon as room was available for them on an outgoing ship.
Up-to-date machinery used in cigarette making can turn out 1350 cigarettes a minute.
