HUTT VALLEY NEWS

A PLUNKET WEEKEND (From "The Post's" Representative.) Last weekend might almost have been called "Plunket weekend" at Petone, for the newly-formed ladies' committee arranged two very successful functions which, not only benefited the Plunket Society's Petone branch financially, but also brought this admirable work before the public. On Friday a baby show was held in conjunction with a "bring and buy" afternoon in the Petone Tennis Club's pavilion. Between fifty and sixty entries were received for the three keenly-contested baby show classes, the judges being Mrs. A. J. Pascoe and Mrs. C. G. Scrimgeour. The prizes, which were donated by Mrs. E. Swanson and Messrs. E. K. Neill and J. R. Carey, were awarded to Patricia Hill, Ron Norman, and Joy Morrison. A large cake, donated by Mrs. Pascoe for a guessing competition, was won by Mrs. O. Silbery, and Mrs. Condon was the successful competitor in a popular nail-driving contest. Mrs. C. Holden, of the Wellington Plunket council, attended, and apologies and good wishes were received from several other members of the council. Afternon tea was served in the upstairs rooms by the Petone committee ladies. Sunday Night Concert. A form of entertainment which has been seldom given of late years is the concert of sacred music, but the large audience which gathered at the Grand Theatre, Petone, for the Sunday night sacred concert, presented under the auspices of the Plunket Society, proved its wide appeal. The selection of items was excellent and the high standard of well-known artists made an outstanding performance of great enjoyment. Vocal solos were given by Mesdames G. R. Millward and T. Corkill, and Misses Leonard Kevin, McDonagh, and Wilkinson; elocutionary items by Mrs. Miller and Miss E. Rainsford; a cornet solo by the boy cornetist, Richard Cairns; and violin solo. Perhaps the most popular item of the evening was the group of Maori songs sung by the Ropu Maori Choir with Mrs. ParataOlsen as soloist. Taylor's Novelty Band played selected numbers and the Petone Municipal Band gave the opening and concluding items of this excellent concert which it is hoped will be the forerunner of many more.
