OBITUARY
MR. D.S. MCGHIE The death occurred suddenly in Wellington on Saturday of Mr. David Scott McGhie, of 15 Orchard Street, Goldie's Brae. The late Mr. McGhie was a veteran of the South African and Great Wars and in 1935 unsuccessfully contested the Pahiatua seat at the General Election. He served in the South African War from 1900 to 1902, and on his return to England was granted a commission in the Royal Engineers (2nd Lanarkshire) Volunteers. He remained with the Lanarkshires till 1907. On the outbreak of the Great War Mr. McGhie took active part in recruiting, addressing numerous meetings in various parts Of England. He then applied for, and received, a commis-

Alter a short period of service in Scotland he was transferred to Egypt, where his regiment was on active service. He served on Gallipoli during the occupation by the Allies, and on the evacuation of the peninsula served in Sinai, During the early part of 1916 Mr. McGhie was engaged in well-digging at Ogratina. On Easter Sunday of that year his company was attacked by an overwhelming force of Turks and after heavy fighting was forced to surrender, the few survivors being taken prisoners. Mr. McGhie remained a prisoner of war in Turkey until the end of hostilities when he was repatriated to England. He subsequently came to New Zealand, but his experiences during the war had undermined his health and were no doubt largely responsible for his sudden death from heart failure. He leaves his widow, two daughters, and a son who is at present in London. The funeral took place this morning. MRS. H. F. LAURENSON (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.' The death has occurred of Mrs. Helen Fergusson Laurenson, widow of Mr. George Laureiison, M.P. for Lyttelton for several years till he died in 1913 Mrs. Laurenson was a daughter of Mr. James Tait, Christchurch. She is survived by two sons and five daughters, Mr. G. L. Laurenson, Commissioner of Transport, and Dr. J. T Laurenson, and Misses F. J. and M. Laurenson, Christchurch, Mrs. W. A. Johnston, Lincoln, and Mrs. Guy Ring, Waikato. .
