USE OF WATER
LOWER HUTT RECORD
The Lower Hutt Borough Engineer reported to the council last evening that the water used in the borough during February was 48,830,000 gallons, as against 50,955,000 gallons in January. Owing to the dry weather experienced in January and February and also to the increased population of the borough, the consumption constitutes a record for both months, the average daily consumption being 1,940,000 and 1,750,000 gallons per day respectively. Due to the greatlyincreased population in the eastern portion of the borough the pull on the mains has been in that direction, with the .result that the whole of that portion of the borough north of Waterloo Road depends almost entirely on the one pump at Birch Street boosting station. In order to keep the water in the main reservoir at a safe level it was found necessary to run the pumps almost continuously throughout the month. The water pumped from the station during February was 36,936,000 gallons. At the Birch Street boosting station the water pumped Was 11,895,000 gallons, and at the Seaview Road Eastbourne station the Wajer pumped to Eastbourne during February was 12,587,000 gallons, or 450,000 gallons per day.
