UNTIDY STREETS
. (To the Editor.) Sir, —After reading the reply of Mr. K. E. Luke, City Engineer, to Captain j S. S. Halm's criticism regarding cleaner streets, I would like to suggest that a bin for used tram tickets be made at each exit of the tramcars. I have seen them in use in Copenhagen, in Denmark. These bins are fitted into the woodwork like a letter-box. And the passengers would soon become accustomed to placing their used tickets in the bin on alighting, I have often observed the tram conductors on arriving at the terminus of their run bring cut a little broom and sweep all the tickets and other litter on to the street; also I have seen tram tickets picked up from the floor and thrown out of the window while the car has ■been in motion. This all helps to bring about an-untidy city. I think these bins would be a great help to tooth passengers and conductors. —I am, etc., A CLEANER CITY.
<To the Editor.) Sir, —I wish to endorse the remarks oS Captain S. Holm, president of the Wellington Beautifying Society, with regard to the untidy condition of most of Wellington's streets, espeqially Courtenay Place and its environs. I believe it is not so much the fault of, the City Council, as the gross carelessness of many people and children who deliberately drop papers, tobacco tins, banana skins, etc., indiscriminately, and very rarely use the few receptacles placed by the City Council for such refuse. A receptacle on' every tram for tickets and ticket butts (often thrown out of the window by the guards) would help keep the streets clean. Also instruction in the schools on this matter would greatly assist, and be an example to older folk. With the Centennial so close . at hand it behoves the citizens to take an interest in their city, and prevent the streets being made a dumping ground for rubbish.—l am, etc., ' CIVIC PRIDE.
