A REAL CHAMPION

HIGHLAND SCOTT'S CLASS

(Special to the "Evening Post.'') CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. The Timaru Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting attracted a good deal of attention by reason of the card including two classic events, but they were not a success, the trotting event proving a real fiasco. Highland Scott made no race of the pacing event once the field turned for home, and he is a potential champion. MOST OF FIELD BREAK. The New Zealand Trotting Stakes, for the third year of its existence, was a fiasco. There were six starters but only one of them went smoothly. This was Invigorator, a big colt by Sonoma Harvester from a Drusus mare. In the hands of his Rangiora trainer, .G. H. Murfitt, he went off well and trotted without a mistake, winning by a hundred yards. Ocean Belle, who was second, is by Wrack from a Bon Palqh mare, a good trotting pedigree. She broke several times but went well in patches. Sealand, a Wrack colt, showed speed after going off badly. Douglas McElwyn went off all right but broke more than once. Gallant Amazon and Shirley Temple settled their chances at the start and did not show, much speed later. SEVERAL FALL, The Timaru Nursery Stakes, with a field, of seventeen two-year-olds, was spoilt when 'Gallant Chief fell after going about three furlongs. Several horses fell over him, while others had to be pulled up. From this point only six of the candidates continued in the race. Betty Boop led out, having Isabel Scott, Gold Bar, and Southern Princess as her nearest attendants at the end. of two furlongs, while after the mishap Highland Scott and Latest Edition followed this quartet. Isabel Scott joined Betty Boop at the home turn, followed by Highland Scott, who went on when the straight was reached to beat Betty Boop easily. Gold Bar was three lengths away, then Latest Edition, while Isabel Scott tired to fifth, with Southern Princess further back. Highland S.cott is the best two-year-old that has ever been seen in New Zealand. A FINE FINISH. . The Timaru Trotting Cup was one of the best races seen on the course. Ferry Post stood on the mark, while Our War tangled early. Fine Art soon took charge and after two furlongs Sandusky headed Toorak, while two furlongs further on Horse Power, Silver Guy, and Donald Dhu were handy. Fine Art was beaten when fairly in the straight, where Sandusky and Silver Guy were going well. Donald Dhu headed Horse Power a hundred yards from the post, with the other pair both putting in good work. Horse Power came on again but failed in the last few strides, Donald Dhu beating him by a neck, while half a length back Sandusky was a neck in front of Silver Guy. The winner's performance was that of a good' horse, and he is on the way to Cup class.
