HEAVY EXPORT DROP
FRUIT FROM NELSON
DRY GROWING SEASON
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
NELSON, This Day.
The serious effect of the dry spell on the fruit-growing industry is shown by a substantial drop in the export figures, as compared with last year.
To March 3 this year only 45,006 cases were shipped*, against 119,242 at the same date last year. After the heavy export of 968,421 cases last year, it was expected that this season's production would be lighter, but the heavy falling-off is mainly due to lack of rain and the fruit not sizing up.
So far 2( per cent, of the fruit has been smaller sizes, as compared with only 6 per cent, last season.
