SHANGHAI "BAD LANDS"
COMBINED FORCES
CURBING TERRORISM
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received February 23, 9 a.m.) SHANGHAI, February 22. In an effort to seize the perpetrators of the recent shootings, a force of 800, including 100 men of the East Surrey Regiment, 100 Japanese, 100 Russians, and a detachment of Italian marines, participated in a clean-up drive of the so-called "bad lands" outside the western district of the International Settlement. Two hundred suspects were arrested and released after being questioned. The commanders of the local Japanese military and naval forces called on the chairman of the Municipal Council and requested its assent to measures to cope with terrorism. Later they called on the commanders of the British and Italian forces and reported their action. Gunmen today entered the western district of the International Settlement, killing one Chinese policeman and wounding four. Afterwards they escaped into the Japanese-controlled area.
