"SQUEALERS"
(To the Editor.) Sir, —It is reported, in last night's "Evening Post," under the heading of "Rich Dominion," that Mr. Semple made the following remarks; "The squealers over import control are those growing wealthy on foreign goods^ [ that are denying this opportunity to lyouth." After serving my country during the Great War, I arrived in New Zealand j after a period of convalescence, full lof initiative, and with a definite objective in view, which was to build a really good business on behalf of my British-principals. After all these many years of really hard labour and the travelling of hundreds of thousands of miles, enduring at times both privation and hardships, I had the satisfaction of seeing the business grow, unitil today it is reasonably satisfactory, and I can look with pride on my own unaided achievement. My principals hav»e natuvally rewarded me, and for over the past twelve months we have /been preparing for our "great year"— New Zealand Centenary, 1939-40. I am now definitely a "squealer," but have not grown wealthy on foreign •goods, but am being cfenied my rights, having my initiative cut from me, and seeing my achievement of these many years jettisoned by tme actions of the Government. I wonder what would have been the reaction had Mr. Semple worked for 'an objective in his j political arena, and^ then someone unfairly knocked him back, just when he thought he had achieved the whole of his objective. The word "squealer" would not have been strong enough to express his feelinjgs under such circumstances. I would mention that my licences are all cut approximately 50 per cent, on my last year's business, which year was not anywhere near as good as the year previous.—l937.—l am, etc., BIRMINGHAM. February 22. .
