FIGURES FOR JANUARY
There was an increase in the cargo handled in Wellington during Jani vary, compared with January, 1938, but there was a decrease in general cargo exports. "In reviewing the shipping and cargo statistics for January it will be 'noted that there is a decrease in the tonnage of trading vessels arriving as compared with the corresponding month of last year, the figures being 386,554 net registered tons for January, 1939, as against 406,949 tons, a decrease of 20,395 tons, equal to 5 per cent.," said the chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board (Mr. C. M. Turrell) at a meeting of the board last night. "The cargo handled amounted to 185,749 tons, an increase of 1764 tons, or 0.9 per cent. Increases are shown in general cargo imports of 7723 ' tons, general cargo transhipments 958 tons, and timber imports 1,008.116 super feet, whilst decreases are shown in general cargo exports of 1970 tons, oils in bulk 5553 tons, and although cheese exports are slightly up, butter, cheese, and frozen I meat shipments in the aggregate hay ! decreased by 2549 tons.
