CENTRE SINGLES

WON BY G. H. BRADLEY

Playing consistently good bowls throughout the competition, G. H. Bradley, of the Lyall Bay Club, yesterday became the Wellington Bowling Centre's champion of champions for the 1938-39 season. A former wellknown footballer, he has been prominent in competition on the bowling green since taking up this summer pastime, and his ability was revealed to the full yesterday as he played his way to the final. It was in the deciding game, however, that his drawing powers reached a very high standard, and made the task of his worthy rival, J. R. Smith (Kelburn), himself an old campaigner, a formidable one. In the semi-finals Bradley, opposed by Spills (Wellington), had a comfortable win, though there was not the same degree of accuracy in this game as in the final. A feature .of this game was that on two successive ends each player scored the maximum. The Kelburn /representative, J. K. k^} 1"I---played well all the way, and had to beat some very strong contenders, as did Bradley, in winning his way to the final. ' , . At the conclusion of the day s play, which took place on the Kelburn Club s green in excellent A weather, the new champion was congratulated on behalf of the centre by Mr. W. Gilbert who deputised for the president (Mr. M. J. Casey).. Tribute was paid also to the runner-up, and •appreciation expressed of the Kelburn Club's facilities and assistance in having the contest carried through so successfully. Results were:— Third Round.—Quinn (Upper Hutt) 21, Brighting (Hataitai) 11; Spiller (Wellington) 20, Webster (Otaki Railway) 16; Bradley (Lyall Bay) 18. Rodger (Khandallah) 9; Smith (Kelburn) 18, Jones (Island Bay) 9. Semi-finals.—Smith 24, Quinn 17; Bradley 23, Spiller 12. Final.—Bradley 22, Smith 14.
