COMING TALKS

A talk with a special interest to old soldiers will be given by Major F. H. Lampen this evening, entitled "Just Batmen." Those who heard Major Lampen's recent talk, "Just Hats," will know what to expect in the way of humorous reminiscence. Batmen in the Army are apt to be characters and Major Lampeh will bring this out from his own experience. Why do people go to the Tropics? Mostly to make a living, is the answer that Mr. B. W. Collins will give to this question in a talk at 3YA next Monday evening. Mr. Collins will give some details of the way in which Europeans earn a living in New Guinea and the life they lead. A talk at 4YA that has some connection with this New Guinea talk is one by Mr. Angus Ross, which will Ibe heard on Tuesday evening next. Why did'people come to New Zealand in the very early days? Supposing you were an Englishman in 1839, what would have been the consideration that induced you to uproot yourself and sail for a very distant country where, British sovereignty had not yet been proclaimed? Mr. Ross will consider in his talk why so many English people made this move one hundred years ago. The talk has a bearing on the centennial. The winter course of talks on historical, economic, political and literary subjects, which have been a feature of the National Broadcasting Service's programmes for the last three years, will be starting soon at the various stations. The first station to begin will be 3YA, which will open with talks on the nature of civilisation. Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland, Professor of Philosophy at Canterbury College, will open the series.
