ADVERTISING SEATS
BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY'S EFFORTS
QUESTION OF FINANCE
Over the past few months a subcommittee of the Wellington Beautifying Society ha? been working f,or the removal of the advertising seats from Wellington. The sub-committee met the reprej sentatives of the seat advertising I company in September, to ask if the | company was prepared under any conditions at all to cancel its undertaking. At a further meeting held in November the company advised the ; sub-committee that it was prepared to ! sell out its undertaking to someone who would donate the seats to the city and surrender the .advertising licence. The amount required to cover the company's outlay only was estimated at approximately £2000 to £2500 at that date. A sub-committee of the Beautifying Society then met representatives.,^ the Wellington City Council, suggesting that the company's offer be accepted and that the money be provided by a bequest which was to come to the city for the purchase of seats. The City Council refused this offer. The sub-committee of the Beautifying Society then met the representatives of the company again, asking how far the company would agree to a modification of designs of advertisements and the elimination of a clash of colours. The company advised that it had already given an undertaking to that effect to a sub-committee of the City Council which had been set up to go into the whole matter of colour schemes and designs with the company. Short of some person or persons providing the necessary finance to buy out the company, the society/ can see no way at this moment toeliminate seat advertising from Wellington. ■■
