INDIAN'S LAPSES
TWO YEARS IN BORSTAL
"SOMEWHAT OF PROBLEM"
"He has been in New Zealand three years, and he is somewhat* of a problem," said Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle in the Magistrate's Court yesterday referring to Gosai Dullabh, a farm labourer, aged 20, who pleaded guilty, before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., to f§ur j charges of theft of sums of money, (ranging from 5s 5d to £1 17s 6d. "He is regarded very unfavourably by his fellow-countrymen," said the detectivesergeant, "and his chief pastime seems to have been writing indecent letters and sending them through the post to other Indians." The accused, said Mr. Doyle, gave considerable trouble last year, and came before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in connection with writing the letters. He was sorry to say that the accused had not ceased that practice, although he was not now charged with any of those offences. He had now, appar- [ ently, launched out on a career of i crime. I. "I think the proper thing for you, 1 Gosai, is to be sent to a Borstal instit'uj tion where you will be taught to look ! after yourself." said the Magistrate, i after listening to what the Probation I Officer had to say regarding the ac-' cused. "You will be taught not to do these things you have been doing-^ sending indecent letters through the post —and to leave alone what does not belong to you." On one charge Gosai Dullabh was convicted and sentenced to two years in' a Borstal institution, and on each o£ the other charges he was convicted iaad discharged.
