TRAINING DESIRABLE

YOUNG MOTOR-CYCLISTS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, February 16,

The desirability of forcing young people applying for a licence to ride a motor-cycle to join some organisation which would train them in the careful use of the machines was expressed by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) in addressing members of the Auckland Road Safety Committee. In view of the number of accidents involving motor-cyclists, the Minister considered some form of training for learners necessary.

The remark was made when members of the committee asked the Minister if the Government intended stopping pillion-riding and imposing severe restrictions on motor-cyclists.

Mr. Semple said he was satisfied more had to be done to reduce the number of fatal accidents. Though he had no special restrictions in mind, the committee would have the opportunity of discussing the matter with him before anything drastic was contemplated.
