1 ARCHITECTS' CONFERENCE
COMPETITIONS AND LIBRARY

DUNEDIN, February 16
The annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Architects was continued today, the new council appointed the previous day meeting under the chairmanship of Mr. Cecil W. Wood. Remits were considered and general business, including the election of officers and committees, was conducted in the morning, delegates and their wives being taken by car to Larnach's Castle in the afternoon. In the .■ evening the annual dinner of the institute was held. The conference will be concluded tomorrow.
The following officers were elected: — President, Mr. J. M. Dawson (Wellington).; honorary secretary, Mr. S. Natusch (Wellington); honorary treasurer, Mr. W. J. McKeon (Wellington); additional councillors, Messrs. Robin Hood and R. G. Talboys (Tara-naki-Wanganui branch), A. C. Ford (Southland).
The following committees were appointed:—Executive and finance, Messrs. W. Gray Young (deputychairman), H. C. Morton, W. K. Cook, J. I. King, F. E. Greenish, D. Natusch, W. J. McKeon, and S. W. Fearn (all of Wellington); committee of architectural education, Messrs. L. S. Piper, H. C. Masses, P. C. I. Crookes, R. G. S. Beatson, R. A. Lippincott, and W. H. Gummer (Auckland), and twelve advistory members from different district branches; committee of practice and discipline, the president and Messrs. Mandeno, P. Y. Wales, O. E. Mac Fie, H. McDowell Smith, E. S. C. Miller, and R. H. Fraser (Otago); library and journal committee, Messrs. J. B. Young, C. H. Mitchell, L. K. Cook, W. G. McKeon, F. E. Greenish (editor and convener) ; legislation committee, the president and Messrs. F. E. Greenish (convener), S. Natusch, and H. Morton, with the chairman of district branches and Mr. J. Park (Auckland) as advisory members.
INSTITUTE LIBRARY.
A Canterbury remit was carried as follows: —"That the executive be asked to consider the possibility of establishing the institute library on a sounder basis, making it possible for the library to be built up from time to time by purchase, donation, and bequest."
A remit from Auckland, "That the small house competition as at present constituted be discontinued and in place thereof a competition for the award of a bronze medal be instituted for the best domestic architecture in New Zealand with an approximate area of 2500 square feet as a limit to size," was carried.
On behalf of the Otago branch, Mr. McDowell Smith submitted the following remit:—'"That the institute's regulations governing the architectural competition shall include provision for a fund additional to the prize-money for the purpose of supplying every competitor with a complete set of printed or photographic reproductions in leaflet form of the most important plans and elevations of schemes which receive premiums and honourable mention."
After some discussion on ways and means of carrying out the suggestion, the remit was altered to one recommending the executive of.the institute to explore the possibilities of this proposal.
It was decided that no transfers should be made this year to the Benevolent Professional Defence Scholarship, the Beauchamp-Platts Memorial Prize, or the library funds.
It was decided that the 1940 conference should be held in Wellington on dates to be fixed by the executive.
