CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY
WELLINGTON TOURNEY
Most of the events in the Wellington croquet championships are nearing a finish and good progress was made with the matches yesterday. In the handicap singles, first grade, Mrs. Walker has reached the finals, having defeated Mrs. Bryan in the semi-finals. Mrs. Heenan is the other finalist and the match will be played probably tomorrow. The open championship with section play is well advanced and the position is as follows: — No. 1 Section.—Mrs. Gambriii, 5 wins, 1 to play; Mrs. Chetwin, 5 wins, 1 to play; Mrs. Bock, Twin, 3 to play; Mrs. Cleland, 5 wins, finished; Mrs. Kelly, 1 win, 3 to play; Mrs. Woodley, 1 win, 4 to play; Mrs. Kerr, no wins, 4 to play; Mrs. Ryan, no wins, 5 to play. Section 2.—Mrs. McLennan, 5 wins, 1 to play; Mrs. Greig, 6 wins, finished; Mrs. Bradley, 4 wins, 3 to play; Mrs. Galvin, 1 win, 3 to play; Mrs. Barker, no wins, 5 to play; Mrs. Burd, 4 wins, 1 to play; Mrs. Russell, 1 win, 1 to play. Section 3.—Mrs. Walker, 5 wins, 1 to play; Mrs. Moeller, 6 wins, 1 to play; Mrs. Cadwallader, 2 wins, 3 to play; Mrs. Heenan, 2 wins, 3 to play ; Mrs. Fairley, 2 wins, 3 to play; Mrs. Pearce, 2 wins, 1 to play; Mrs. Cameron, 2 wins, 2 to play. GAMES DESCRIBED
Open Championship.—Mrs. Chetwin v. Mrs. Woodley: The former player made a good start, making a break of nine, after which Mrs. Woodley, who had not been shooting .as well as usual, hit in and made a few points. From this stage in and out play continued until the finish of the game, which ended in favour of Mrs. Chetwin with a score of 26-12.
Handicap Singles, semi-finals.—Mrs. Bryan v. Mrs. Walker: Both these scratch players went well in this game. At the commencement in-and-out /play was a feature until Mrs. Bryan failed at the fourth hoop. Mrs. Walker hit in, and went from the fourth to rover. At this stage the backward ball was on 3 back, and after a few intervening turns Mrs. Walker finished with the backward ball, and in the next turn pegged out, winning with a score of 26-14.
Open Championship.—Mrs. Cleland v. Mrs. Bock: Mrs. Bock took'the play and made a few points before Mrs. Cleland got in and went to rover in a few turns. Mrs. Bock then made a few more points, when Mrs. Cleland made an all-round break to the peg with'the backward ball. In-and-out play continued for a short time before Mrs. Cleland finished the game by a margin of eleven points. Mrs. Gambrill v. Mrs. Woodley: At the commencement of the game Mrs. Woodley' made a good start and soon drew ahead while Mrs. Gambrill was finding the lawn somewhat heavy. With several opportunities in her favour, Mrs. Gambrill soon advanced her clip, and with steady play overtook her opponent's lead, winning by a margin of six points. The following are the results of the day's play:— Level Singles No. 4.—First life: Mrs. Morgan defeated Mrs. McKay, 26-13. Second life: Mrs. Annear defeated Mrs. Neilson 26-19; Mrs. Collins defeated Mrs. Jackson, 26-10; Mrs. Murphy defeated Mrs. Ryan, 26-23. Level) Singles No 3.—First life: Mrs. Fairley defeated Mrs. Piper, 26-24; Mrs. Foley defeated Mrs. Lee, 26-13; Mrs. Foley defeated Mrs. Owen by default; Mrs. Foley defeated Mrs. Pickard, 26----24 Ladies' Championship.—Mrs. Walker defeated Mrs. Bryan, 26-14. Handicap Singles.—Mrs. Ryan defeated Mrs. Maxwel, 26-16; Mrs. G. Collins defeated Mrs. Jackson. Open Championship.—Mrs. Allan defeated Mrs. Lowery, 26-9; Mrs. Chetwin defeated Mrs. Ryan, 26-12; Mrs. Chetwin defeated Mrs. Woodley, 26-12; Mrs. McLennan defeated Mrs. Russell, 26-11; Mrs. Robinson defeated Mrs. Pickard, 26-14; Mrs. McLennan defeated Mrs. Barker, 26-10; Mrs. Gambrill defeated Mrs. Woodley. 26-20; Mrs. Woodley defeated Kelly, 26-8; Mrs. Fairley defeated Mrs. Heenan, 26-23.
