MORE HORSES THAN EVER

In spite of the political and economic uncertainties of the last six months, racing has continued to prosper in England. The number of horses that ran in England, Scotland, and Ireland last year was greater than ever before.

Altogether, 5143 horses were seen out, of whom 1837 were two-year-olds and 1357 three-year-olds—both record figures. The total amount of stakes won in England was £731,826 10s 6d, which is slightly higher than the 1937 figure, but below that for 1928. During the season 1985 races were contested, of which 1032, or over half, were sprint events under a mile. There were 51 races over two miles, compared with 52 in 1937, and approximately one in every three races was for two-year-olds only.
