WESTERN ACCESS
BOWEN STREET ROUTE
AN IMMEDIATE START
MAYOR'S STATEMENT
The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) stated today that he had informed the Karori Progressive Association that the final construction plans for the new roadway in connection with the western access had been completed and the approval of the Government to proceed with the work was obtained on February 15. Steps had been taken by the City Engineer to start the construction work immediately.
For some time, said Mr. Hislop, negotiations had been proceeding between the Government and the City Council regarding certain modifications in the proposals for the construction of the roadway. In the preparation of the final plans the City Engineer drew attention to the economy which could be effected if the batters on the lower side of the road could be laid to encroach in part on land owned by the Government, and arrangements had now been made which would enable this to be done. The acquisition of the necessary properties by the Government and the obtaining of vacant possession has necessarily taken some time to complete, but the way was now clear for .an immediate commencement of the work, which would be pushed ahead with all speed.
