PORT DEVELOPMENT
% BOARD'S FLANS
DANGER OF THROUGH' • TRAFFIC ROAD'
In an interview today Mr. C. M. Turrell, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, pointed out that any proposed use ot Waterloo Quay and Aotea Quay vs a through-traffic coad from md lo Wellington would cause serious difficulty in connection with the future development of the por'; of Wellington. "The whole oi" the wharf extension' proposed is on Fryatt Quay and Aotea Quay and the heavy lorry traffic .that will be necessary to serve ships discharging and loading at this point will make Waterloo Quay and Aotea Quay impracticable t'rom a through-traffic point of view," said Mr. Turrell. "Also, there is the railway traffic across Waterloo Quay shunting to and from the wharves. WIDEN THORNDON QUAY. "In my opinion it is essential that the main through traffic should be carried by widening Thorndon Quay (and by taking the trams off) which, I understand, was the original proposal of the Wellington City Council and for which purpose they acquired the land. The seriousness of this from a shipping point of view is so great that the matter should be taken in hand immediately. The ramp serves its useful purpose in giving heavy motor traffic access to shipping and warehouses in that vicinity: "As the wharf accommodation increases along Fryatt Quay and Aotea Quay more railway crossings will have to be put in to serve that area and the consequence is that either the shunting to these wharves will have to be held up or the motorists will have to be held up. Anyone who will take the trouble to investigate the plans that the Wellington Harbour Board has for the future development of this port cannot fai) to see that the whole of these plans would be jeopardised by Aotea Quay and Waterloo Quay being made a through-traffic road for the general public."
