INCREASE NOTED
UNEMPLOYED IN BRITAIN

The Ministry of Labour estimate* that on January 16 the number of insured persons in employment in Britain was approximately 12,079,000. Thjs is 184,000 less than a month before and about 50,000 less than a year ago.
At the same date the registered unemployed numbered 2,039,026, comprising '1,594,430 wholly unemployed, 379,027 temporarily laid off, and 75,568 normally in casual employment. The total is 207,654 more than a month before and 211,419 more than a year before. Of the increase of 207,654, more than 39,000 are accounted for by the first registration of boys and girls leaving school at the end of the December term, while 84,319 other persons are -temporarily laid off. Part of_ the decline in employment is due- lo the severe weather, which restricted outdoor employment at the date of the January count. .
