FINED FOR BOOKMAKING
(Special to the "Evening Post-")
PALMERSTON N., This- Day.
"Now, this is where the accused stands," commented Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., in the Feilding Magistrate's Court yesterday, "and I want him to remember that although he is fined £20 on this occasion, if he does not give up bookmaking he will find himself in a very difficult position. The Supreme Court has laid it down that Magistrates should impose imprisonment for this class of offence, and I would ask him to remember that. The Magistrate has a discretion notwithstanding the higher Court's direction, but I wish to warn him that if he doesn't give up the practice he will find himself in serious trouble."
The accused was A. R. McKinnon, freezing works employee. According to entries in his book he had taken about 120 bets of one shilling. The police said he had been one of a sustenance gang at some £30 men^
