MAKARA'S POSITION
CLOSED GORGE ROAD
EXTRA MAINTENANCE COSTS
The position of Makara County in regard to extra expense'caused by the closing of Ngah'auranga Gorge Road was raised at the meeting of the City and Suburban Highways Board today. It was stated that the Wakefield Gully road had in consequence 5 been called upon to carry much heavier traffic than it was constructed to take, and that the maintenance expenses had been heavy. Meanwhile, said Mr^ R. G. . Mexted, the county was paying maintenance for a mile and a half of Ngahauranga Gorge which was not being used,. It had been thought at first that the Public Works Department would maintain the Wakefield Gully road while the Gorge road was being diverted, but the .Department would not "take it on." It was decided to' ask the Government to meet the extra' expense of the maintenance, of the Wakefield Gully road which had been forced' on the Makara County owing to the work in the gorge and the diversion of traffic to the Wakefield Gully road.
