AUCKLAND BATSMEN

SHIELD CRICKET

TEAM OUT FOR 489

j (By Telegraph—Press Association.) i AUCKLAND, This Day.. With 332 runs on the board for seven wickets, Auckland started the second day of the Plunket Shield match against Wellington in a fairly strong position. Carson (66) and Matheson (5) faced Ashenden and Pritchard, who bowled from the opposite ends to yesterday. The -wicket had dried out and there was a stiff cross breeze. The weather was dull.

At lunch Carson and Matheson were still together after breaking the Plunket Shield and Auckland records for the eighth wicket. The score was then seven for 462 (Carsen not out 126, Matheson not out 74, extras 17). Auckland were all out at 2.10 p.m. for 489. Carson made 137 and Matheson 90. Pritchard took five wickets.

The batsmen were not inclined to take risks, as keen fielding was sup-

ported by accurate bowling. Only 10 runs were added in the first halfhour, during which Matheson reached double figures for a full hour's batting, as he started at 5.30 p.m. yesterday. ) FINE FIELDING. . Carson, a left-hander, made severs! nice shots, especially to leg, but fine fielding By Rainbird and Sheffield cut off several likely boundaries. Ongley also saved a 4 from a magnificent off-drive. ] After bowling five overs for 7 runs, ] Ashenden (a medium-paced bowler) gave way to Lamason (slow righthand) and Matheson played an uppish shot which dropped perilously close to Sheffield at third man.

An hour's play produced 41 runs, and during this time Pritchard had bowled eight overs for 18 runs. Gallichan, a slow left-hander, took over from him 'when the score was 373. Carson was then 84 and Matheson 27.' The latter then needed 16 more runs for his 1000 runs in. Plunket Shield cricket. Details:-r-AUCICLAND. First Innings.
