SEQUEL TO BUSH FIRES
FINES IMPOSED
BREACHES OF REGULATIONS
(Received February 4, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, February 3. Arising out of the recent bush fires, twenty persons were charged in the Ferntree Gully Court today with having lit fires in proclaimed areas during the proclaimed periods. Fines were imposed- ranging from £10 to £35. Several of the cases were adjourned.
Another case concerned a youth who was said by a constable to be subnormal. He was remanded for seven days. The police alleged that he said he wanted to burn out a man because he was always picking at him.
Several of the men who were fined said that they lit fires to burn breaks to protect their properties. A schoolboy aged 18 years, a well-known firefighter, who said he was unaware that the regulations applied to burning rubbish, was fined £10.
Inquests concerning the deaths of two fire victims at Toolangi were opened at Healesville today and adjourned,, the Coroner stating that the person who caused the fire might yet find himself charged with manslaughter. Evidence was given that this' fire later spread to Narbethong, where it caused the deaths of six people.
