LOOK TO DEFENCES

SOUTH AFRICAN PARLIAMENT

(Received February 4, noon.) CAPE TOWN, February 3. i. At the opening of Parliament the Governor-General, Sir Patrick Duncan, expressed gratification at the improvement in international relations, but warned every country which valued its liberty to keep its defences equipped.

The Leader of the Nationalist Party gave notice that it would ask the Government officially to declare "Die Stem van Suid Afrika" as the only National Anthem.

The Leader of the Dominion Party will request an annual adequate grant to the Royal Navy in acknowledgment of the protection afforded and will also ask for further shipping contracts with the British Mercantile Marine.

Another surplus of £1,000,000 is anticipated.
