EVANS BAY SUCCESSES
RECENT INTER-CLUB RACING
During the past few weeks several important yachting events have been decided, in which the Evans Bay Club has figured prominently, the most important of these being the Cornwell Cup, which was won for Wellington by Eric Wagstaffe and Peter Cooke. Their win was particularly meritorious, as it is the first time Wellington has won the cup since its inception in 1921.
Congratulations are also extended to "Bun" Jukes on winning the New Zealand monotype championship.
In the series of inter-club events held last Saturday at Port Nicholson the club was particularly successful. Kitty, sailed by Jim Bolland, had a decisive victory in the inter-club cup race for fourteen footers, crossing the line 4min 24sec ahead of Jean (R.P.N.Y.C.). Southern Maid finished third, and Stardust (ex-Kotare) fourth.
Although the Idle-Along championship for the Holmes Cup was won by the Tornado (Heretaunga), Evans Bay boats sailed consistently, gaining third, fourth, fifth, and sixth places. In this race Vampire, sailing two up, had easily the best start, and led around the first lap, but felt the need of an extra man in the somewhat squally breeze, and could only cross the finishing line third.
Evans Bay boats dominated the Takapuna and Tauranga classes, honours going to Damfino I (Pat Millar) and Matchbox (W. Petherick), respectively. On Sunday, Evans Bay Idle-Alongs had a hard tussle to gain a tie with the Heretaunga Club in the annua] inter-club teams' race for the M.X Millinery Cup. Riptide, Belvedere, and Reo finished second, third, and fifth respectively, but Damfino did not finish the course. This was particularly disappointing as the extra point gained by Damfino, had she finished, would have meant the winning of the trophy for Evans Bay. A feature of the race was the speedy last lap by Belvedere, sailing from the back of the fleet into third place.
This weekerid is another big one for the club. The Lamberg Cup, a general handicap for all centre-boarders, was to be held this afternoon, and tomorrow everyone will be out for the limbless soldiers' picnic, which is to be held at Worser Bay. The annual race for the Limbies' Cup will be competed for by centreboarders this season, and should provide some keen competition.
Dick Moult, although not given a chance to compete for the Masport Cup this year, is getting in some good practice for next year with his new boat Taubman 111.
We have been told that the Viking's Christmas trip was a "rumpty" in more ways than one.
Ron Julian's Stardust lost some of the glamour from its name last Sunday, when after a successful outing at Day's Bay she had to suffer the indignity of a tow up the bay against a spanking southerly.
Alan Johnson has been up to his tricks again recently. The result was a gaping hole in the Aileen's mainsail. However, on the beach afterwards, it was a case of "mum's.the word."
A correspondent has asked us if Evans Bay boys "can take it"—we refer him to Phil Harlen.
An aged and decrepit Idle Along is seen in Arthur Douglas's shed. Has he been converted at last?
Congratulations to Doug. Beck. His little "flip" last Sunday morning was quite neat and very effective.
