THE WAR ON CANCER
Australia and New Zealand have played a notable part in the worldwide fight against cancer. Since 1928 annual conferences have been held in Australia, and at these leading medical men and physicists from the various States and from New Zealand have been able to exchange experiences and results.. Between conferences research work has been carried on systematically and, apparently, with a considerable measure of success. This year the annual conference is to be held in Wellington, opening on February 14,; and the advance guard of a notable Australian delegation, Dr. J. H. L.j Cumpston, who is Director-General of Public Health, arrived here yesterday. , The account which he was able to give of the progress being made in Australia in the campaign against cancer makes satisfying reading and indicates that slowly but surely science is making headway against the dread disease. In New Zealand there have been similar results, and at the last annual meeting of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society Sir James Elliott, who presided, was able to point to a very definite improvement in the results of treatment given. It is fitting that Sir James Elliott, who has played a leading ' part in the fight against cancer in New Zealand, will preside at the conference to be held next month. Under his guidance, the conference should make yet another contribution to a great cause.
