TWO OTHERS ESCAPE

MELBOURNE, January 21,

The radio announcer Eric Welch was unable to broadcast the Caulfield races today, as was his custom, owing to a sensational motoring experience overnight. He was driving his car, accompanied by , two companions, Reginald Tonkin and James Kelly, when' the vehicle plunged into the River Yarra, near Spencer Street docks. Welch and Tonkin got through the carj windows, rose to the surface and were rescued by men on the wharf, but Kelly, who was imprisoned in the submerged car, was drowned. Tonkin and Kelly were members of the Victoria Racing Club's staff.
