CORRESPONDENCE

APPROACH TO EXHIBITION

(To the Editor.) Sir, —A chorus of approval has rightly been voiced over the general layout of the Exhibition buildings and approaches, as far as these can be judged from their present stage of development. But there is one very important point which up till now seems to have escaped observation. Kingsford Smith Street has become a splendid thoroughfare up to within 50 or 60 yards of the Kilbirnie end. Here it narrows to a bottle-neck simply because two private houses stand in the way. May we ask, Sir, whether these residences are to be allowed to spoil the main approach to the Exhibition? The bulk of the traffic will unquestionably travel via Kilbirnie and Coutts Street. What is the use of widening Kingsford Smith Street for the greater part of its length and leaving this absurdly narrow entrance al; its crucial point? Who is responsible for this anomaly?—l am, ,etc, ROSA DARTLE. [Inquiries .reveal that it is not the intention of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company to remove the private dwellings mentioned by the correspondent. The entrance from Coutts Street will however be splayed back, and it is considered that it will be entirely adequate.]
