WAREHAM'S KNOCK

OLD BOYS V. INSTITUTE

Attractive batting by C. Wareham and V. H. dv Chateau was the feature of the first day's play in the1 Wellington College Old Boys—lnstitute match, at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Opening for Old Boys, on a perfect wicket and with a fast outfield, the pair settled down and gave very useful performances. Wareham, in form, is one of the prettiest batsmen in the province, and he p.leasetl the crowcLon. Saturday -with his beautifully- timed cuts * and daring. hooks. Dv Chateau, more subdued than his partner, never* theless played the sounder cricket. Slow at the start, he gradually opened out, and, just prior to his dismissal, he was moving along well. They scored 74 and 70 respectively. Old Boys were all out f0r.284, other good batting be* ing provided by Thompson (30), Boyes (30), and Whyte (22). Institute, at stumps, had 14 on the board for. one wicket, Lang having been* run out before a run had been scored. Scott and McLean appeared quite comfort? able when stumps were drawn. The best bowling for Institute was performed by R ( Crook and J. McKeown, the latter, a Plunket Shield.re* presentative, being the sixth man to be called on in this department. Buchan and A. McLean provided useful support, the .latter, in particular, being hard; to get away. ,-. C: S. Dempster was unfortunate in suffering a split finger when he .attempted to hold a fast ball in the slips off the fourth, delivery of the day. Dv Chateau was the batsman attd Crook the bowler. Dempster left the ground t6 receive attention, and took no further part in the day's play. Details:— OLD BOYS. First Innings. dv Chateau, c sub., b Buchan ... 70 WareMim, st.
