GIRL ASSAULTED

STRUGGLE IN STREET

GAOL FOR MARRIED MAN

An incident that occurred in Abel Smith Street in the early hours of yesterday morning resulted in the appearance of Arthur Vincent Chick, a process worker, in the Magistrate's Court today on a charge of assaulting a young woman. He pleaded guilty.

After Sub-Inspector J. A. Dempsey, prosecuting, had outlined the facts of the case against Chick, the Magistrate (Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M.) convicted the accused and sentenced him to two months' imprisonment.

The girl in the case had attended a dance, and was walking home at 20 minutes to 4 in the morning, said Sub-Inspector Dempsey. Constable Harvey, on duty in Abel Smith Street, | heard screams from further down the street, summoned a taxi, and rode in it until he saw the defendant come from behind a car. Asked where the girl was, the defendant said she was down the street. He was >under the influence of liquor. At the corner of Abel Smith Street he was asked where, the girl was, and replied, "Find her." The girl told the police that as she was' on her way home the defendant, with whom she had danced on occasions, but whose name she did not know, met her and walked along the street with her. He threw her down on the pavement and tried to force his attentions upon her. Due to some degree of intoxication of the accused, jsaid the sub-inspector, the girl was able to hold her own, and, by screaming, attracted attention. There was a struggle for some minutes, and the defendant ran away when the • taxidriver and constable came along.

"I have a clear record apart from this," said the accused. He accepted that, said Sub-Inspector Dempsey, but the accused was fortunate that he was not charged with a much more serious offence.

He was sorry he had done anything like that, said the accused. He was a married man with a family to keep. On a charge of drunkenness Chick was convicted and discharged.
