BEAULIVRE SHOWS PLUCK
Rare courage was shown by Beaulivre in snatching back victory in the Nursery Handicap after the lead had been taken off him inside the last halffurlong by the southerner Gold Salute. Though faltering under his weight, he simply would not yield to defeat, and in the last few strides he drove .himself forward again to secure the verdict by a short head. It is not often that a young horse is capable of such a performance. With the maximum top weight (9.7) under the conditions of the race, he was conceding 241b to Gold Salute, 261b to Lutanist, and more than two stone to everything else. This victory almost more than any other stamps him as one of the best juveniles who have raced in recent years, particularly as, though solid, he is not a really big two-year-old.
Beaulivre had the good luck to draw the rails, and he was in front from the start. He was never far clear, however, and when Gold Salute challenged him from the false, rail it looked as if he must surrender. He couldi not ward off the challenge wholly, but he was not at the end of his resources, and after being headed lie was able to come again. The plucky effort was fittingly recognised by the public, who accorded the colt a rousing i reception on his return to the enclosure.
Gold Salute was the only horse capable of challenging Beaulivre, but, in spite of his weight advantage, he was up against something too good for him. This Lord Warden colt, a halfbrother to Miladi, is one of the best of the South Islanders this season.
Beau Vite was finishing on well among the others after not having been prominent early, and he was rewarded by getting up to cut Pen out of third dividend. Pen had been" second in the running to the straight. Serenata was fifth or thereabouts all the way and was right up in that berth at the close. The rest were headed by Aranui, Dynasty, and Trench Law. Lutanist, wide out, was among- those nearest in pursuit of the topweight crossing to the straight but he failed to come on from there.
Beaulivre's victory gave Beau. Pere his third winner in three races during the first two days of the meeting in which two-year-olds might compete. Beau Pere's juvenile record on the course is a remarkable one.
