SEEN IN HARBOUR

SHARK OR PORPOISE?

Much alarm was created on the Petone foreshore on Saturday when a ,- shark about ten feet long was reported to have been seen near the • ,v^ beach. It remained in the vicinity for some time, • but disappeared be- '; fore the police arrived on the scene. Vr The alarm wasr given by two boys t who were rowing a small boat near *' the shore. They saw $he fish along- » i side the boat, and immediately made « for the beach. The fish did not fol- , i low, but the water was cleared in record time. Some people returned -r? to bathe in the shallows, though they •'- ---kept a sharp eye seaward. Though sharks are by no means un- * } common in the harbour, only one fatality has ever beeu recorded and that was considerably more than 50 . years ago. Sharks have been seen ':■ and caught off Petone, near Ward Is- ,' . ■', land, and in the bays on the eastern side of the harbour. It is quite pos- . • sible, however, that what was seen on ' ■' Saturday was not a shark at all, as ■' two porpoises have been noticed , in the vicinity for some weeks past, , '.
