THAMES, This Day.

The second day of the Thames Jockey Club's Annual Meeting was held today in fine weather. Won by a length, with half a length between second and third. Time, 1 mm 274secs. (Winner trained by H. B. Lorigan, Trentham). . Trailing the leaders for the major part of the journey, Lady Lyric finished determinedly to win the Melrose Handicap in decisive fashion. She appreciated the distance of the event, - and the manner in which she scored suggested that she will continue to pay her way over a distance of ground. Diamond Cutter ran right up to his first day's form and a little less than

a furlong from home it looked as though he would, prevail, but he was unable to withstand the finishing-run of the winner Sigurd, although appearing to get away a shade slowly, was handy enough at the false rail, but he did not finish with the same dash as on Saturday. Improvident was always in the thick of the fray, but White Gold was disappointing. She was the acutal leader for six furlongs, but failed badly over the last furlong. Punarua showed speed, and Gladium was finishing on. SUMMER HANDICAP, £750; second horse £150; and third £75; about H miles.. —Mr. T. H. Coltman's eh g Haughty Winner, by Winning Hit—Disdainful, 4yrs, 8.1 (L. J. Ellis) 1 \ 5—6 —Mr. B. Burgess's b m Lady Montana, by Lord Quex—Kilceit, 4yrs, 8.1 (A. Midwood) .. 2 10—10—Mr. P. T. Wilson) (bracketed), 2-1 Gay Son 8.11 (H. N. Wiggins), 7-7 Dictate 7.8 (P. ISpratt), :3-3 Homily car. 7.8* (W. J. I Broughton), 8-8 Aussie Ra car. 7.4-i | (F. Cleaver), 9-9 Hunting Cat car. 7.12 (G. R. Tattersall), 5-5 Corroboree 7.0 (R. Howell). . A Won by a short head, with the third horse half a length back. Time, 2min 4£sec. (Winner trained by C. C. McCarthy, Riccarton.) A rare finish was provided in the! Summer Handicap when Haughty Win-1 ncr and Lady Montana crossed the line j with the narrowest of margins sepaj rating them. Haughty Winner would have been a shade unlucky to lose, for ihe was forced to cover. a good deal of extra ground on the turn and then was checked slightly at the false rail. Lady Montana ran a really! good race and it was only in the last stride that' she succumbed. Queen of Song was trailing the field in the early stages and it was a good effort on her part to secure third money. Wild Chase was another to come home particularly well, and Gay Son was fifth after being near the rear early. No excuses could be offered for Homily, Trench Fight, and Corroboree, who were well up all the way.
