GLOVES OFF
SAFETY ON ROADS
NEW SOUTH WALES ON WARPATH
'. (From "The PostV Representative.) SYDNEY, January 13. ■ : Rigid traffic control, similar to that Introduced in New Zealand three years ago, has been decided x upon by the New South Wales Cabinet to reduce the appalling toll of the road in this $Jtate. During the 12 months ended
June 30, |938^' there were 12,575 accidents, which caused 600 deaths 'and injuried 8615 other persons. Police safety patrols, courtesy squads to educate the motorists, a wide publicity campaign, -and a .30 miles. an hour speed limit%ere some of the measures adopted J^t year without great success, tct lessen the road[evil. "Now," tp quote, the ' Minister of Transport (Mr* Bruxner), "the gloves are # off. Motorists who wilfully flout traffic laws will be given no quarter . during 1939. These people have been given a fair ehanqe;" appeals to their better nature have failed. We will see what sterner measures will do. The great bulk^of car users have heeded our campaign for road safety. Those who have not ace a menace to..themselves and to the general public. They are responsible for half the road tragedies in the State. Some just ignore traffic laws; others are just -careless or stupid. With human life the price of their folly, I say they are not entitled to hold a driver's licence." ; When Mr. Bruxner put his proposals before the Cabinet he was enjoined to bring them into operation as soon as possible. Eighty-eight additional police and 21 motor utility trucks equipped with wireless will patrol mam roads on which the .majority oft accidents have occurred. :> : ■ Provision has also been made for 30 additional electromatic signals, progressive expansion of the policy of pro-> viding pedestrian lines and refuges, promulgation' of a regulation to ensure thatmotorists do not cross double lines on roadways, continuance of a' vigorousTpolicy of education through the Press, cinema," and radio, and an: schools, progressive improvement of road pavements by widening and elimination of dangerous curves and crests, and tightening up of control of the movement of^pedestrians op, Ssoad-^
