SADDLE TROTTING
PLEA TO BAN JOCKEYS
A recommendation has been made to the New.Zealand Trotting Association by . the executive', of the Auckland Owners', Trainers', and Breeders' Association that saddle races should be confined to riders who do not v hold a jockey's licence, on the grounds that these events are mainly to encourage those engaged in the.trotting sport. At a well-attended meeting early this week, Mr. C. E. Craig reported that a large number of members were of the opinion that professional jockeys should be prohibited from riding at trotting meetings.' For four seasons saddle races had been eliminated from programmes in the Auckland Province, and it was to help trotting horsemen, who seldom got a chance to drive, that the Auckland and Waik'ato Clubs decided to put on these events again. The president, Mr. C. E. Cowan, endorsed the view put forward by the secretary and considered that, as trotting riders were not encroaching on the racing side, it was only fair they should be afforded some protection. : The meeting unanimously. decided to bring the matter under the notice of the trotting association.
