THE FIFTH RACE
OTAGO'S FINE SAILING
The Otago crew, T. S. Camp and W. A. Carrington, handled their boat exceedingly well to win the fifth race, which began at 11.5 ,a.m. It was sailed twice round a windward and leeward course from' the usual starting line to a seaward buoy and back.
Auckland agam showed the way across the starting line, • followed in orde> by,Qtago, Wellington, Tauranga, Plimmerton, Manukau, Paremata, and Wanganui. On the beat, tothe seaward buoy Tauranga pointed well and were first round the mark, with Otago a close second. There was a gap to Wellington and Auckland, and another gap to Paremata, Wanganui, Plimmerton, and Manukau, the last-named being 80 seconds behind Tauranga.
All flew spinnakers on the run back to the starting line, arid no trouble was experienced. Tauranga were still leading Otago [at the mark, 45 seconds separating "the two boats. Wellington, in third place, lost valuable seconds by dousing their spinnaker too soon, while Paremata sailed past Auckland into fourth position. Auckland, Wanganui, Plimmerton, and Manukau were next; the whole fleet was still well bunched.
It. was on the second and last beat that Otagd won the race,, overtaking Tauranga and rounding the windward mark 47 seconds ahead of their rivals. Wellington were about the same distance behind Tauranga in third place. Auckland lost position badly. There was no change in the positions of the leaders on the final run. The other five boats made a fine sight as they sped homewards in a close bunch. Placings and sailing times were:— Otago, 30m Is ...\ 1 Tauranga, 31m 5s 2 Wellington, 32m 12s 3 Plimmerton, 33m 34s 4 Wanganui, 33m 36s 5 Paremata, 33m 37s ...,...; 6 Manukau, 33m 44s ................. 7 Auckland, 33m 48s 8 The crews used the following boats: Otago, Torment; Tauranga, Runa; Wellington, Aloha; Auckland, Keena; Wanganui, Betty; Paremata, Edola; Manukau, Billy Boy; Plimmerton, Me Too.
