BRILLIANT PLAY
BALMORAL TEAM
BRIGHTING'S ELIMINATION
(Special to the "Evening' Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day.
A feature of yesterday's play in.the singles and fours was the fine performance of W. C. Franks, who did remarkably well to. reach the finals of both events. Throughout the tournament his play has been a model of con-, sistency. He has received splendid support in the fours event, while his individual brilliance has been patent in the singles.
The morning fours contest between the two-life teams, Deare and Franks, saw the Balmoral combination playing its usual steady game, and it was evident fairly-early in the match what t the result would be. Deare's teanv played well at times, but was no match for the Balmoral rink. Brighting'sHH r taitai rink, which is still being skipped by Naylor, was always in the ascendancy in the game against Evans, Hamilton. The Hamilton team did not combine with its usual efficiency. Both Naylor and Brighting played good bowls in this game. E. J. Hill, Carlj ton, a former member of the Wellingiton Club, played substitute lead for } Charters, who was indisposed. ;
Lobb early established a commanding lead in his game with Tongue, Rocky Nook, and, although the latter wiped off some of the deficit in the closing stages, the Taranaki rink was riot unduly , troubled.
The.eighth round games in the fours saw the undefeated Balmoral team pitted against Brijjhting's Hataitai rink, while Deare's Carlton combination played Lobb, West End. Tarahaki. The Balmoral four lost no time in gauging the qualities of the green and opened up with scores of two and three. There was consternation among the members of the Hataitai rink when Naylor's drive on the fourth head took out all his team's bowls and Balmoral secured seven points. Scoring was then even up to the twelfth head, when the board read 17-8 in favour of Balmoral. Good play by Hataitai, principally by. the skip Naylor, led to a run of two and four singles and the deficiency was reduced to three points. Singles to each side were scored and the. Hataitai players required four to tie on the last end, but a single only came their way, and the game finished 19-16.
The Lobb-Deare contest saw the fortunes fluctuate, Lobb was up 9-2 on the seventh head. 14-6 on the twelfth head, and then Deare took a hand in the scoring to make the tally 23-15 in his favour on the seventeenth head. The Carlton team's run of scores consisted of 1. 4, 5, 2, 5. The final head was -not played, the game ending at 27 to 15.
The two losing teams in the semifinal games. Lobb and Brighting,' played off for third place, the Wellington team proving superior and winning rather easily with the last two heads unplayed.
