THANKS TO THE ARTIST
After a Command Performance lifts that attended by the King and Queen at the Coliseum the artists always receive a personal letter of thanks from their Majesties, says the "Manchester Guardian." Queen Victoria instituted this gracious practice, but nowadays I the letters are not of such a stereotyped character as those which used, to be dispatched by her private secre-. tary, the late Sir Henry Ponsonby. The soul of politeness and anxious to make no invidious distinctions, Sif Henry drew up a form of letter for, general use in this connection, iv most instances it served its purpose well, but on one occasion the proprie-, tor of a troop of performing geese, which had entertained the RoyalFamily at Windsor was astonished to receive from Sir Henry a communication:. "Sir, I am instructed by the Queen to thank you for your visit of yesterday, and to express the hope that the ladies and gentlemen of your company returned safely to London, and in good health"! V ;
