JOHNSTON AND CO., Auctioneers. areas. Brook House, Hackney, and Holland House, in Kensington, are reputed to have had secret rooms, the ghost of the first Lord Holland being said to come out of \a hidden opening in the latter building. Cromwell House, on Highgate Hill, once had a hidey-hole upstairs, but it has been done away with, although an underground passage still runs towards Archway Road. Hidden rooms have been found, too, inside Partingdale Manor, at Mill Hill. This house is associated with Dick Turpin, and possibly he used some of, the secret corners of the old place. Morrcrofts, not far from Uxbridge, was formerly a priests' refuge, several of them once escaping capture here by hiding in a concealed cellar. These historic houses have been ill-1 vestigated by Mr. Granville Squiers, probably the greatest authority on i secret hides. He has also found some faked hidey-holes, for example, at Cedar House, also near Uxbridge, and quite a few alleged 'hides which were found on examination to have been used for quite legitimate purposes. Of course,, every .occupation has its disappointments, but: Mr. Squiers has had his reward when he has been successful in discovering genuine hides with romantic stories from the difficult and troubled years o£ Britain's- history.
