CHAMPION ATHLETE
BOOT FOR AUSTRALIA
N.S.W. TITLE MEETING
Leave of absence has been granted V. P. Boot, Canterbury, the New Zealand and British Empire Games halfmile champion and record holder, to compete in New South Wales next month at the invitation of the New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association^ Boot, who will run as a New Zealand representative, intends leaving for Sydney by the Awatea from Wellington on January 24. 9
The New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association has invited Boot to compete in the State championships, to be held on the Sydney Sports Ground on February 4 and 11, and it is proposed also that he should compete at a night fixture on the Hurstville Oval on February 7 and at a meeting at Newcastle on February 18.
When he was in Wellington last weekend to meet the Victorian G. Backhouse over the mile at the Basin Reserve, Boot expressed doubt whether it would be possible for him to remain in Australia to compete at the Newcastle meeting.
Boot is to meet Backhouse again over the mile at the Carisbrook Ground, Dunedin, tomororw afternoon. W. A. C. Pullar, Masterton, who played so prominent a part in the mile at the Basin Reserve last Saturday, will also be taking part, having been invited by the Otago Amateur Athletic Centre to make the trip to Dunedin.
