ALLEGED SMUGGLING

THOUSAND DOLLARS'BAIL

NEW YORK, January 10,

Jack Benny indicated that he pleaded not guilty to three charges of smuggling in connection with the alleged purchase of jewels and was admitted to bail in the sum of 1000 dollars. He is to be tried on January 24.

The indictment.^ arose from the smuggling activities of an agent named Albert Chaperau, who was himself recently found guilty of smuggling. It is stated that he made plans to disclose to the authorities complete details which would possibly involve thirty prominent people.

A cable of* December 12 stated that George Burns, of the movie and radio team of Burns ahd Allen, pleaded guilty to nine charges of smuggling diamond-studded jewellery and that other prominent cinema people were expected to be involved in a smuggling investigation begun a fortnight before. Those already questioned included Katherine Hepburn, Benny, and Wallace Ford, the movie director. Burns's name was found among correspondence of an'alleged smuggling agent following the arrest of the wife of a New York Judge.
