' Weather fine and mild, but cloud increasing.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing 24 hours, is for moderate to strong but gradually de-

creasing south-westerly winds in the North Island. Elsewhere winds at first will be mainly moderate in force and variable in direction, but there will be a tendency "for north-westerlies or northerlies which later will freshen. In the North Island and' in the eastern and northern parts of the South Island the weather will be fair. In Westland and in the far south the weather will become unsettled, with rain developing, and these conditions will extend later to scattered places in western districts as far north as Taranaki. Temperatures will rise and will become very warm in places east of the ranges.

An anticyclone moving across the Tasman Sea on to New Zealand was this morning centred to the northwest of Cape Maria Van- Diemen. A series of slight secondary depressions is moving along its southern edge. Strong westerly to south-westerly winds prevailed yesterday, gale force being reached in many places south of the Auckland Province. A temporary change to southerlies occurred in some eastern coastal areas. By this morning, however, winds had decreased in force in the South Island, and in the far south they had backed to the north-west or north. In western and southern districts of the South Island the weather has been changeable and showery, with some hail in the far south. Showers extended last night to eastern districts as far as southern Hawke's Bay, but all recorded falls have been less than a quarter of an inch. Otherwise fair to cloudy cc/iditions have prevailed, with cool to moderate temperatures.

Early yesterday morning Auckland's weather was overcast with some light rain, but it cleared after 9 a.m. and the rest of the day was fine and sunny with a fresh wind from the south-south-west. The maximum temperature was 68.6 degrees, and the minimum 58 degrees. Conditions this morning were overcast again after a few light showers earlier.

Wellington had a sunny and mild day, 10.5 hours of bright sunshine being recorded. A strong northwesterly wind changed about 4 p.m. to the south, the change being accompanied by a considerable drop in temperatures. The sky therekfter clouded over and there were brief showers, totalling four points of rain, between 6 and 8 p.m. The sky then cleared rapidly, and this morning's weather was fine and sunny with a light southerly wind. The maximum temperature yesterday, was 66.6 degrees, the minimum last night being 41.6 degrees.

Christchurch had a fine and bright morning with a strong westerly wind. By 11 a.m., however, the sky had clouded over, and about 2 p.m. the wind changed to the south, a few showers following the change. The weather cleared again later, and this morning it was fine with a southwesterly breeze. Temperatures yesterday morning were moderate, the maximum being 69.5 degrees, but the minimum fell later to 40.4 degrees.

Dunedin's weather yesterday was unsettled and stormy. A south-westerly gale was accompanied by frequent heavy showers of rain and there was hail at times, the rainfall at the Heads amounting to 23 points. The weather, however, cleared overnight, and it was fine and sunny this morning with a light south-westerly wind.
