An anticyclone has been moving across the Tasman Sea on to New Zealand, and by this morning its centre was to the north-west of Cape Maria van Diemen, while a series of slight secondary depressions has been movjlng along its southern edge. Strong west lo south-west winds prevailed yesterday, reaching gale force in many places south of the Auckland Province, changing temporarily to south in some eastern coastal districts. By this morning the winds had decreased over the South Island, and had backed to north-west or north in the far south. The weather was changeable and showery in western and southern districts of the South Island, with some hail in the far south. Showers extended last night along eastern districts as far as southern Hawke's Bay, but otherwise fair to cloudy conditions prevailed. Temperatures were cool to moderate.

Winds.—Moderate to strong, but gradually decreasing south-westerlies in the North Island. Elsewhere winds at flrst mainly moderate in force and variable in direction, but tending north-westerly or northerly and freshening. Seas.—Rather rough to rough, but decreasing soon on the east coast and later north of Cape Egmont. Weather.—Fair in the North Island and in eastern and northern portions of the South. Becoming unsettled in Westland and the far south, with rain developing and later extending to scattered portions of western districts as far as Taranaki.
