KARITANE LAUNCHED

Cable advice has been received by the Union Steam Ship Company that their new cargo vessel Karitane was successfully launched on Wednesday from the yard of Messrs. Henry Robb Ltd., at Leith. The Karitane is a motor vessel of 2500 tons gross, designed for a service speed of 10 knots, and will be employed in the coastal and intercolonial cargo trade. Captain C. C. Waters will command the vessel, which is expected to leave the United Kingdom towards the middle of February for New Zealand, via Panama. The Karitane is the last of the twelve ships, including the Awatea and Matua, built in the United Kingdom for the same owners in the last three years.
