RAILWAY APPRENTICES
Successes gained by railway apprentices attending the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College were mentioned in the annual report of the principal, who states that since the commencement of the apprenticeship training scheme in the railway workshops in 1930, 18 scholarships had been awarded for New Zealand, and five of the eighteen had been awarded to apprentices attending the evening classes of the school. The results were not yet to hand for 1938-39.
Two former and one of the present evening instructors won these scholarships. Diploma allowances were awarded to apprentices who obtained more than 80 per cent, in the final examinations as well as in workshop practice. In 1937, 23 awards were made in the Wellington district and ten pupils attending the college gained awards. In 1938, 25 awards were made and thirteen pupils attending the college gained awards.
